Day 1: Eventually, A Walk Downtown
On day one with my camera at my side, I carefully considered everything as potential sources of blog. My bike ride to work was pleasant enough. The air was cool, aromatic and damp. Floridian. I passed the dog walkers (so many curious people and breeds). I arrived at work and rewarded my self with a coffee; a reward for the work I was going to do. I considered the stainless helvetica honoring some great doctors and nurses on the brick facade. Nope. I walked up my favorite staircase (yes, I have one) to the third floor and I took a photo of a photo that was hanging on the wall. I refer to this wall as the Urology Hall of Fame, but I've never told anybody this before. This doctor's photo was taken in the 50's and it appears to have been copied many times. Through that process of copying he has become strange looking. He also appears to have worms hanging from his mouth. It's a rather unpleasant effect, especially for such a famous urologist. I got to my office and the texts and calls and email came pouring in because everyone knew it was my administrative day (no clinic or cath lab). I listened to Beach House at my desk. I got caught up with all my work. I went for another walk and was reminded that I was, in fact, in a hospital. A man with a bandaged bloodied head boarded the elevator. A woman with a undisclosed lower extremity issue wheeled herself onto the elevator. She attempted to engage the head wound man in a conversation, sort of like, "How long have you been in?" He brushed her off. He didn't want to talk about the harm that has visited his body. She wheeled herself off the elevator. I was headed to the PICU on the 10th floor because I knew there was a very photogenic open air staircase that overlooks the entire UF campus. It's a grand view (no smoking!) but it was noon and the light was harsh. I retreated to my office again. I listened to Richard Buckner. I had a flurry of late day calls and email to deal with. I left late and upon arrival at the bike rack I realized that I didn't have my keys. I thought this might be an interesting adventure: how do I get home? Then, Cymande happily picked me up and she proposed that we go have a drink at the Top after we put the boys to bed. We didn't go to the Top. We had gelato instead and here are four pictures I took along the walk.
